There has been a rise in the number of outpatient surgeries, particularly in office-based settings. Currently, the regulation of these surgical facilities varies significantly from state to state. Research on the safety of office-based surgical facilities indicates that these surgeries are generally safe and have low rates of adverse outcomes. However, to ensure safety, certain recommendations should be followed. These include careful selection of patients and procedures, meeting minimum volume requirements, appropriate credentialing, and the use of checklists.
