Caregiving Considerations in Understanding Loneliness and Isolation

Clin Geriatr Med. 2025 Aug;41(3):419-433. doi: 10.1016/j.cger.2025.04.002. Epub 2025 May 17.

Abstract

Family caregivers of older adults face psychosocial challenges, including social isolation and loneliness, which impact their well-being and care provision. These challenges can result from their caregiving responsibilities, illness-related stigma, altered social networks, and changes in dyadic relationships. Quantitative evidence and evidence-based interventions to address these challenges in social connection among caregivers remain limited. Future efforts need to consider individualized caregiving experiences, care recipients' illness trajectories, dyadic approaches, cultural appropriateness, and systemic support through inclusive policies. Listening to caregivers' voices in clinical practice is crucial to promote social connection and resilience for both patients and their families.
